Vitrified Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain tiles have been the biggest news in the tile industry in this last decade. They are available in matt, polished, textured, and glazed finishes. Porcelain tiles are formed by a mixture of kaolin clays, quartz, and feldspar. They are fired at 1200-1300 degrees, forming extremely uniform and compact tiles. Porcelain tiles were commonly used in commercial applications because of their strength, low porosity, and high abrasion resistance. Today, due to new technologies and lower production costs, porcelain tiles can now be found in domestic living areas, bathrooms, and kitchens throughout the world.
Unglazed vitrified porcelain are tiles that do not have a glaze added to the surface. Instead it is the natural state of the clays and additives that makes up the colour of the tile. One of the benefits of a vitrified porcelain tile is if it does get chipped, thecolour continues through the body of the tile. Also, because of its strength, a vitrified porcelain tile can be machined to produce a polished surface, a matt texture, or even a rough external surface. Vitrified porcelain tiles can be produced with crisp edges (referred to as ‘rectified’), so that every tile is exactly the same size.
Vitrified porcelain tiles are a beautiful product, and best emulate natural stones like marbles and granites. Be aware though, mechanically enhancing the surface of natural porcelain to a polished finish, or even a matt finish, opens up tiny micropores on the surface of the tile. It’s for this reason that most tile manufacturers and retailers recommend that porcelain tiles be sealed – a process which seals these tiny pores.
All sound too confusing? There’s no need to stress, The Tile People have all the advice to help you make the right decisions when purchasing your vitrified porcelain tiles, and the right advice and products for maintaining their beautiful appearance.
